This drawing is slightly larger than the usual bookplates, measuring approximately 20x17cm and would fit a larger style book on the Battke of Britain or the Luftwaffe. Franz Von Werra is famous as ‘The One That Got Away’, escaping back to Germany from a POW camp in Canada. He was a ‘playboy’ figure in the Luftwaffe and had his own pet lion called Simba. Von Werra was shot down over Kent in September 1940 but there is confusion over who shot him down. If you spoke to Battle of Britain spitfire pilots Gerald Stapleton or George Bennions they both claimed the victory. What seems to be clear is that they both took part in the attack. The highly detailed drawing of Von Werra and Simba by Steve Teasdale has been signed in pencil by George ‘Ben’ Bennions who sadly passed away many years ago and is therefore a piece of history never to be repeated. Ben Bennions was a highly successful fighter pilot, scoring at least 12 victories and losing an eye to a German cannon shell himself in 1940.
