The First Heroes by Craig Nelson details the incredible story of the attack by 80 young men on Tokyo in April 1942. The raid was classed as a suicide mission and 16 aircraft were sent as a response to the Japanese Pearl Harbour raid. This thick 2002 first edition hardback details the whole story. It has been enhanced with an original pencil portrait of raid leader Jimmy Doolittle by Steve Teasdale. Doolittle’s genuine signature has been professionally mounted underneath the drawing. Overleaf is another bookplate featuring two rare and genuine Doolittle Raid veteran signatures from Aircraft Number 8. This aircraft developed a fuel issue and was the only one to make an undercarriage down landing in Russia. The signatures belong to Bombardier/Navigator Nolan Herndon and Gunner David Pohl. Both signatures are scarce and valuable. This is a highly collectable copy in excellent condition.
