This is a superb Great Escape related item. This letter is dated August 1943 and would have been written as tunnels Tom, Dick & Harry were being dug (Tom was discovered by the Germans in September). So many questions come into your head when reading this - was W/O Anderson aware of the tunnels? Was he taking an active role in security or acting as a penguin to hide the sand? Further research is needed to try to establish if he had any role to play in the escape. His prisoner number is 790. We have another letter from Anderson dated three days after the escape in March 1944 so we know he was still in the camp during the escape attempt. The lengthy letter has been checked and censored by both German and British censors. In it he talks of camp life and what he is trying to learn. He also makes a request that his family send no more parcels as he is ‘loaded’. The letter is in superb condition for it’s age with only one or two spots and creases. This would look amazing mounted next to a print or as part of any Great Escape related collection.
