This is an original pencil drawing bookplate of legendary Malta Spitfire Ace George ‘ Screwball’ Beurling. The drawing has been signed by the artist Steve Teasdale and Battle of Britain fighter pilot Tony Pickering. Tony was a gunnery instructor at RAf Hawarden in 1941 when Beurling was posted there. Tony told us that Beurling was a loner and maverick but an amazing pilot.

Beurling reached No. 7 Operational Training Unit, at RAF Hawarden, in September 1941. Beurling demonstrated considerable skill in training. In Hawarden, he came under the influence of the great Ginger Lacey, whose score at the time stood at 27. Lacey later commented about Beurling: "There are not two ways about it, he was a wonderful pilot and an even better shot."

Beurling went on to be one of the highest ranking allied fighter pilots with 31 victories. This drawing with highly relevant signature would enhance any book on Beurling, such as his own regarding his experience defending Malta.
