This book is an early 1956 first hand account of the Battle of Britain and WW2 air war by the highest scoring allied fighter ace Johnnie JOHNSON. What makes it unique is that it belonged to Flt Lt Robert Wright, who was Dowding’s assistant and confidant during the Battle of Britain. Robert Wright was a huge advocate of Dowding and was witness to the way he was treated by the higher command after the Battle of Britain. He was the only author who was given permission by Dowding to write his biography, which Wright did in the 1960’s. Wright flew in 85 Sqn with John Cunningham later in the war & became a Guinea Pig under Archibald McIndoe when he suffered burns in a mosquito crash. He wrote many books including Nightfighter with Jimmy Rawnsley and was also a technical advisor for the 1969 Battle of Britain movie. The book has obviously been signed very early after release in 1956 by Johnnie Johnson, hence the very early signature which is quite different to the one he developed later in life. The book has been dedicated to Bob Wright’s son Christopher after his birth. Unique as it is already, the book has been enhanced further with an original pencil portrait of Johnnie Johnson by Steve Teasdale. The book is in very good condition for its age and is bright and clean. The whole dustjacket is not faded but suffers from a printing crease down the front. This is a clean copy of a book which is becoming scarce in its original form.
